This American Table

Armenian Journey

LambCome celebrate spring with a traditional Armenian dinner tracing an Armenian American family's Journey from Kharput, Armenia to Fresno, via southern France and Mexico. Come to taste and enjoy these decidedly Armenian traditions peppered with culinary accents gathered through the long journey to America. This Armenian feast will also feature pasture raised, grilled lamb, Armenian appetizers, dishes and desserts, all accompanied with a delicious 2007 Agajanian Zinfandel vintage created with local grapes. A no host bar will also be available for aperitif.

Dinner Menu

Messa (appetizers)

  • Toorshi - Traditional pickled vegetables: usually a mix of carrots, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, in a vinegary brine with garlic.
  • Lavash - Flat Armenian bread).
  • Fresh Cow Milk String Cheese.
  • Yalanchi -Young, tender grape leaves, stuffed with rice, onions, and olive oil. Then slow-cooked with tomato paste and lemon juice, served cold for messa.

Dinner served with 2007 Agajanian Zinfandel

  • Lamb cooked open an open fire with Hye parsley, garlic, basil and mint.
  • Cheese Berag - cheese stuffed phyllo dough mixed with parsley, baked till golden.
  • Bulgar pilaf, cracked wheat cooked in butter and chicken broth. This hearty side is the true pilaf of every Armenian home.
  • Gananch Fasoolya - a string Beans dish

Dessert

  • Kurabia - A dense sugar cookie, made with butter, sugar and flour, that melts in your mouth and heart.
  • Than: madzoon (yogurt) over ice.
  • Soorj -the original "Turkish" coffee - ground coffee cooked with sugar. This is a strong ,bold coffee.

ORGANIC STONE FRUIT JUBILEE CELEBRATES TASTINGS, MUSIC, KID’S CORNER

(Clovis, California): Save the date - Saturday, June 18 – and prepare to spend a perfect summer evening celebrating  the Organic Stone Fruit Jubilee at the idyllic Mokichi Okada Association’s Oasis Garden, 5790 N. Indianola Ave. in Clovis, California. This is a once -a-year opportunity for the public to purchase artisan stone fruits from the San Joaquin Valley’s most revered growers. Tastings of the luscious fruits are featured at this family event, accompanied by live music, expert talks, demonstrations, chef’s offerings and a kid’s corner. The event runs from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the event gate.  Children 12 and younger are free.

One dozen Central Valley farmers from the region’s Golden Triangle will be featuring as many as 60 varieties of organic peaches, nectarines, plums, pluots and apricots at this second annual event. Live music performed by the multi-talented Eva Scow and Mike Taylor will serve as the back drop to the serene garden setting. Chef-inspired fruit dishes will include organic peach paletas from La Reina de Michoacan; skillfully prepared beverages such as mint, hibiscus and lemon grass teas; exotic and popular dishes; handmade fruit pastries. Open to the general public, the event will also host a children’s activity corner featuring crafts, as well as demonstrations and workshops on optimal health, flower arranging, jam making and a tour of the fabulous organic farm and garden.  A traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony makes a marvelous addition to the line-up.

Free Screening of Deborah Koons Garcia's latest movie "Symphony of the Soil".

Debra Koons GarciaThe Department of Plant Science, The Jordan College of Agriculture Sciences & Technology, and California State University, Fresno invite you to a Work in Progress Screening of the Movie Symphony of the Soil.

Deborah Koons Garcia has been making films for over 30 years. She received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and owns and operates Lily Films, a production company based in Mill Valley, California. Her film, The Future of Food, premiered at Film Forum in New York City and has screened at theaters, film food and farming festivals all over the world.
